Zn and Mn, niacin and pantothenic acid,
lysine and methionine.
Minerals and electrolytes in horses
Mineral substances account for about 4% of our body substance, whereby the "big 7" - Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, Cl and S, occur in much larger quantities than the other trace elements, of which there are over thirty. Some of these minerals, for instance Ca, P and Mg, fulfill tasks in solid form as reserves and fillers, e.g. in bones. Minerals in solute form in the aqueous solutions of body fluids, inside the cells and in the extra cellular space fulfill their main tasks in the form of positive or negative ions as activators of all biological processes.
These electrolytes maintain, within a highly organized framework, the electrolytic tension between the intracellular and intercellular spaces and facilitate intake of nutrients into the cell through membranes as well as the removal of waste material from the cell (e.g. by means of the sodium-potassium pump). Electrolytes maintain the osmotic pressure and the acid-base balance and facilitate the conduction of all kinds of substances and messages from cell to cell as well as suitable responses to stimuli such as muscle contractions, hormone release, neural peptides, neural stimulants etc. Some electrolytes assume positions of generalized significance in these functions such as Na, K, Cl and Ca, whereby others fulfill only specific metabolic tasks.
This system functions only in the presence of sufficient water and re-supplies of electrolytes, whereby functional lapses are hardly to be expected in healthy animals. Diseases such as enteritis and febrile infections, as well as high-energy dietary rations or natural processes such as birth of young may compromise the heat or water-electrolyte balance. In an actively sweating horse, this may also occur due to external stress loads such as transport or unusually lengthy periods of exertion - resulting in excessive loss of water and mineral salts (see also EQUISTRO ELYTAAN POWDER). The appropriate measures in such cases are those that allow the horse to compensate part of these losses immediately, enabling the body's control mechanisms to take effect more rapidly. The vitamins and essential amino acids that influence metabolism can also support this process.
