Radiography

Radiography, commonly known as x-ray, is an essential tool in any equine veterinary practice.

Radiography here at Fellows Farm equine clinic

Radiography, commonly known as x-ray, is an essential tool in any equine veterinary practice for looking at the bones and joints of your horse.

It is most commonly used in lameness investigations to look at the bones and joints of the leg but is also invaluable in the evaluation of the skull, dental disease, lungs, neck and back.
We have two powerful digital radiography systems at our disposal.

DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHY (DR)
For use out on the yard the practice has a TruDR digital radiography system.
This is a fully portable laptop-based system and images appear within a split second of being taken. This allows us to take excellent quality digital images without the requirement for the horse to come into the clinic.

It is perfect for taking images of the horse’s lower limb. It also allows us to perform pre-purchase radiographs at the time of the vetting.

COMPUTED RADIOGRAPHY (CR)
At the clinic we have a more powerful computed x-ray set up which is not portable.
In addition to the capabilities of the DR this system allows us to image the horses upper limbs, neck, back, chest and skull.
The other advantage of coming into the clinic for x-rays is that any further investigation and/or treatment can be performed at the same time.

PRE-PURCHASE RADIOGRAPHY
It is normal practice for insurance companies to request pre-purchase or vetting radiographs when the horse being vetted is worth over a certain amount.
There is a standard series of radiographs the insurance company will request. This varies slightly between the different companies.

There are also situations where you may be worried about a specific joint in a horse you are having vetted, for example the hocks in a teenage horse, or the vet may express a concern during the pre-purchase examination making it necessary to perform radiographs of the area in question.

The TruDR system allows us to accommodate your vetting needs without the requirement for a trip to the clinic or a separate visit.
